Gutter Cleaning

Gutter Cleaning Tips

Cleaning the gutters is one of those dreaded chores that come along with owning a home. If someone simply neglects to clean their gutters, there are numerous problems that can occur because of this. Gutters are designed so that water coming off of the roof has a place to go without the water having to drop along other areas of the home. When they become clogged the water will have nowhere to go, plus, the gutters become very heavy. When the gutters become heavy, this may result into the gutter compromising the entire roof of the home, and you could be facing thousands of dollars in repairs. Plus, if the gutters have lots of leaves and debris inside, it could also be a way that a fire starts. Thus, you can see the importance of cleaning your gutters on a routine basis.

The first tip that can help make your job much easier and safer is to use the proper tools when you are cleaning the gutters. You will want to have work gloves so that you do not have to touch the debris that is in the gutters, plus, many people find it helpful to have a water hose or a pressure washer in order to make sure to move this debris out of the gutters. You will also need a garbage bag that you can place the debris that you pull out into, unless you want to spend more time later going around and picking up the debris that you threw onto the ground around the house. Plus, you want to make sure that the water is able to flow through the gutters without becoming stalled at some point. A ladder is also an essential tool, and you will want to make sure that it is a sturdy ladder so that you do not risk falling off and injuring yourself.

Another good tip to have is to have someone helping with the process. Carrying the water hose up and down the ladder could result in falling. Thus, having someone there who can hold the ladder as well as hand you things that you may need is going to increase the safety of the task greatly. When using the ladder be sure that you do not over reach when you are on the ladder. Too many times people do not want to have to climb up and down repeatedly in order to get to the other areas of the gutters, therefore, they reach until they tip the ladder over. This can result in injuries, thus take the time and do the process right. It may require stepping up and down more than what you would like, however, that beats having broken bones.

Once you finish removing the debris you may have to use a cleaning solution to remove the mildew that may be caked onto the sides of the gutters, this is usually very slimy and it will not require much elbow grease to remove. A pressure washing can usually remove this with much ease. Be careful when cleaning the gutter, you might cause personal injury when you fall.
